How effective is liposomal bupivacaine? A look at the bigger picture

Dozens of clinical trials have been published to test the efficacy of liposomal bupivacaine (LB) against the endpoints of reducing postoperative pain, length of hospital stay, and opioid consumption, among others. But how does LB perform in a meta-analysis across multiple procedures and specialties?

The authors of this 2018 meta-analysis conducted a quantitative systematic review in compliance with the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement. The review’s most important finding was “… the lack of a clinically significant effect of liposome bupivacaine on postsurgical analgesia when compared to plain local anesthetics.”
